How to Style a Bookshelf So It Looks Curated, Not Cluttered
Shelves are the backdrop in every photo. Make them look good in a few steps.
To style a bookshelf, use three principles: alternate vertical and horizontal stacks for rhythm, leave gaps instead of packing every slot, and keep spine and decor colors in one family. About one-third empty space per shelf is the key to a premium, uncluttered look.
Alternate stacks and cluster in groups
Do not line up every book upright across a whole shelf. Break it into groups: some vertical, some stacked flat with a small object on top, like a little plant or box, to break the monotony.
Control color and mix three object types
Great shelves usually mix three object types: books, decorative objects, and something living, kept to no more than three main colors.
- Leave roughly one-third of each shelf open
- Group objects in odd numbers, three or five
- Face attractive spines out; tuck clashing ones behind
- Keep heavy items low, light and airy pieces up top
Do I need to turn book spines backward?
Not necessary. Reversed spines look tidy in photos but are impractical daily. A middle path is simply curating spine colors.
Can an empty shelf look bare?
A fully empty shelf looks bare, but rhythmic gaps between object clusters read as intentional and premium.
