Interior Lighting Types Guide: Ambient, Task, and Accent Lighting
The three layers of light and how to place them for a room that looks good day and night.

Good home lighting has three layers: ambient for base brightness, task for reading or cooking, and accent to highlight a wall or object. Using all three layers and choosing the right colour temperature gives a room depth and warmth.
The three layers and what each does
Relying on a single light type usually leaves a room flat or harsh. Layering lets you shift the mood to match the activity.
- Ambient: downlights or ceiling fixtures for whole-room brightness
- Task: under-cabinet kitchen lights, reading lamps, desk lights
- Accent: cove lighting, picture lights, LED strips
- A dimmer shifts the room's mood with a single control
Colour temperature, chosen by room
Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin. Warm light (2700 to 3000K) feels cosy and suits relaxing, while cool white (4000K and up) is crisp and suits work and kitchens. Matching each room matters more than using one temperature everywhere.
- Bedrooms and living rooms: warm 2700 to 3000K
- Kitchens and desks: 3500 to 4000K for clarity
- Bathrooms: 3000 to 4000K depending on cosy or crisp
- Avoid mixing warm and cool in one room until it clashes
Common lighting mistakes in condos
Many condos come with only ambient downlights, leaving rooms flat with hard shadows. Adding just a few task and accent lights lifts the space a lot, without ripping out the whole ceiling.
Is warm or cool light better?
Neither is always better, it depends on the room. Warm light suits resting in bedrooms and living rooms, while cool white suits kitchens and desks that need clarity.
Is cove lighting worth it?
Yes if you want a soft mood and added depth. Hidden LED strips above the ceiling line or behind the TV cut hard shadows and make a room look more premium for little cost.
When should I plan lighting?
Plan it in the design phase, because task and hidden lighting need wiring and ceiling openings prepared in advance. Fixing it later is messier and costlier.
