Interior Paint Finish Guide: Matte, Eggshell, and Semi-Gloss Explained

Understand each sheen level and where it belongs in a Thai home.

2026-05-16

Paint sheens run from flattest to glossiest: matte, eggshell, semi-gloss, and gloss. Glossier finishes wipe clean more easily and resist moisture but reveal wall flaws more. Bedrooms favour matte, while kitchens and bathrooms favour semi-gloss.

How the sheen levels differ

Sheen affects looks, cleaning, and how well it hides wall flaws. Choosing by how a room is used pays off more than choosing on preference alone.

  • Matte: hides wall flaws best and looks soft, but hard to wipe clean
  • Eggshell: a middle ground, attractive and fairly wipeable, good for living rooms
  • Semi-gloss: moisture-tough and easy to clean, ideal for kitchens, baths, and door frames
  • Gloss: the toughest and most wipeable, but shows flaws, best on trim and mouldings

Picking sheen by room in a Thai home

Humid air and greasy cooking vapours mean wet rooms need wipeable, mould-resistant paint, while rest spaces prioritise a calm, easy-on-the-eye look.

  • Bedrooms: matte or eggshell for a relaxing mood
  • Kitchens and baths: semi-gloss for grease and moisture resistance
  • Hallways and kids' rooms: semi-gloss to wipe off hand marks
  • Ceilings: matte to mask flaws and avoid glare

About colour before you commit

A colour looks deeper across a full wall and shifts with the light through the day. Paint a sample on the actual wall and view it in both daylight and evening light before committing.

Which finish suits a small room?

Matte or eggshell in a light tone makes a small room feel airier, since it avoids harsh reflections and hides wall flaws.

Do I need mould-resistant paint in Thailand?

Yes for bathrooms, kitchens, and damp-facing walls, given Thailand's high humidity. Mould-resistant formulas cut black spotting and extend the paint's life.

Can I paint straight over the old colour?

Yes if the old surface is sound and free of damp. But going from dark to light, or over flaking walls, needs a primer first for an even, lasting finish.
