How to Design a Built-In Kitchen That Works and Cleans Easily

Design a built-in kitchen that cooks smoothly, resists humidity, and wipes clean.

A good built-in kitchen has to work in real life and clean easily, not just look good in photos. Start by placing the work triangle between the stove, sink, and fridge to minimise steps, choose water- and moisture-resistant materials, and allow enough storage and sockets, so the kitchen can truly handle Thai cooking with its high heat and grease.

Set the work triangle so cooking flows

The heart of a usable kitchen is the distance between the stove, sink, and fridge. These three should be close enough for a few steps but not so tight that tasks collide. Leave prep counter beside the stove and beside the sink, since that is where the real work happens, put the bin near the sink, and leave a spot to set down hot pans.

Choose materials that resist humidity and wipe clean

A Thai kitchen meets heat, oil, and humidity daily, so materials matter more than looks. Choose cabinet fronts and carcasses that resist moisture, such as water-resistant boards rather than solid wood that swells. The countertop should be a non-absorbent, wipe-clean surface, and the wall behind the stove and sink should be tiled or glassed so grease washes off without soaking in.

  • Moisture-resistant carcasses and door fronts
  • A non-absorbent, wipe-clean countertop
  • A grease-proof wall behind the stove and sink
  • Flat door fronts with no grooves to trap grime

A Thai kitchen and a dry kitchen in one home

Many Bangkok homes separate a heavy Thai kitchen, with its high heat and strong smells, from a dry kitchen or pantry in the main space. If there is room, make the Thai kitchen enclosed with a door and an extractor, and keep an indoor pantry for coffee, reheating, and dry goods. If space is tight, at least fit a strong enough hood and choose materials that do not hold odours.

How tall should a built-in kitchen counter be for comfort?

A comfortable counter height depends on the main user, generally around waist level so you can work without stooping. If you can customise, measure from whoever cooks most often in the household.

Is a condo built-in kitchen different from a house one?

Condo kitchens are usually a small straight or L-shape, leaning on vertical storage and electric or induction hobs because many buildings ban gas. Houses have room for a separate Thai kitchen and can use a gas stove.
