Listing Photo Mistakes That Cheapen Your Property

A listing usually looks cheap because of the photos, not the property.

A listing usually looks cheap because of the photos, not the property: shooting into the light so the room goes dark, tilted vertical phone shots, visible clutter and bins, harsh phone-flash shadows, and bathrooms still full of personal items. Fix these five first and the listing instantly looks more premium with zero extra spend.

The five most common mistakes

Run through these five before shooting, because each is free to fix and shows immediately in the image.

  • Shooting into a window until the room goes dark and the window blows out
  • Holding the phone vertical and tilted, so walls lean
  • Leaving clutter, bins, and towels in the frame
  • Firing the phone flash, creating hard shadows and colour casts
  • Photographing a bathroom with toothbrushes and toiletries still out

A phone can shoot well if you do it right

You do not need an expensive camera for good photos. Shoot horizontally, tap a bright area to lower exposure so windows do not blow out, open curtains for daylight instead of using the flash, and turn on gridlines to keep verticals true. That alone makes the shots look far more professional.

The order of images matters too

The first image decides whether someone clicks or scrolls past. Lead with the best room or a standout view, then living room, kitchen, bedrooms, and close with amenities or the view. Never open with a bathroom or an awkward corner.

How many photos should a listing have?

Around 8 to 15 works well, covering every main room, the view, and shared facilities. Too few looks evasive, while too many repetitive shots bore viewers into scrolling away.

Is daytime or night better for shooting?

Late morning to afternoon, when soft light fills the room, is best for interiors. Night shots suit city views or condos with a lit skyline. Include both if the night view is a selling point.
